Guest Session: Luis Boza - Documentary Photographer
Journalists need to understand their surroundings, protect their own safety, and capture enough visual information to give viewers a clear sense of place
Luis Boza, a freelance photojournalist, shared lessons from a career shaped by persistence, adaptability, and a deep commitment to being present where stories are unfolding. He described photographing everything from political protests and migration along the U.S.–Mexico border to the Pope, public health events, portraits, and everyday life. A recurring theme was that freelancers have to create opportunities for themselves: build relationships, keep shooting even without an assignment, pitch persistently, and be prepared for rejection. Luis emphasized honesty and respect when working with subjects, while also stressing that journalists need to understand their surroundings, protect their own safety, and capture enough visual information to give viewers a clear sense of place and context. He also spoke about the practical realities of the profession—filing quickly, writing accurate captions, learning new tools, maintaining other work to pay the bills, and continually investing in skills and equipment.
