About

Experience LisbonField Notes

Every summer, 12–16 students and alumni mentors from the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication travel to Lisbon, Portugal, for an immersive reporting experience focused on the city’s evolving arts and culture. Over two weeks, students move beyond the familiar tourist view of Lisbon to meet the artists, makers, musicians, designers, chefs, entrepreneurs, and other creative voices shaping the city today. They explore neighborhoods, follow their curiosity, conduct interviews, make photographs and films, and develop multimedia stories that reflect the people, places, traditions, and new ideas they encounter. The experience is as much about how stories are discovered and made as the finished journalism. Students arrive with questions and possibilities—not predetermined narratives—and their stories evolve through reporting, observation, conversation, collaboration, and the unexpected discoveries that happen along the way.

What Are Field Notes?

Lisbon Field Notes offers a window into that process. Through photographs, video, observations, reflections, and behind-the-scenes moments, you can follow our storytellers as their ideas take shape in the field. The finished stories will come later. Here, we invite you to follow the journey as it unfolds.
