Discovering a Coffee + Wine Artist in Alfama
We found an artist whose story was even more interesting than the technique itself.
Kat discovered this story almost by accident while walking through Alfama and noticing a small shop advertising paintings made with coffee and red wine. That immediately caught our attention, and when we returned, we found an artist whose story was even more interesting than the technique itself. He shared stories about his life, his creative process, and the many people he has painted, including figures such as Malala and Barack Obama. We became especially interested in the way his work reflects immigrant experiences and the spread of Portuguese culture around the world. Other artists and writers, including Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, also influence his paintings. The more time we spent with him, the more layers we discovered. While we were filming in his shop, he even surprised Isaac with a painting of him holding a camera—an unexpected and deeply personal gesture that made the experience especially memorable for our team.
